After a successful high school career, Martin enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish between 2011–2015.
Martin spent the first two years of his career as a reserve player, but in 2013, he earned a starting position on the offensive line, playing with his brother Zack.
Martin started the first 11 games of the season before suffering a knee injury that ended his season against BYU. Martin came back in 2014, and as soon as he did, he was made captain of the club.
