Montez Sweat plays defensive end for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League. He stands 1.98 m tall and weighs 119 kg. One of the best tight ends in the nation, he attended and participated in high school football at Stephenson High School. After high school, he made a commitment to Michigan State in order to play collegiate football for the Spartans.
Before redshirting in 2015, he participated in two games there and registered one sack. In 2016, he dropped out of Michigan State and enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He relocated once more in 2017 to play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Mississippi State University.
He recorded 10.5 sacks in his first year at Mississippi State and was selected to the All-SEC football team in 2017. Then, in 2018, he made the 2018 All-SEC football team, was selected an All-American, and recorded 12 sacks as a senior. He ran the 40 yard dash in 4.41 seconds, breaking the combine record for defensive linemen at the 2019 NFL Combine.
The Washington Redskins took Sweat with the 26th overall choice in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He registered a sack and forced a fumble in Week 15 of the 2021 NFL season against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders chose to execute Sweat’s contract’s fifth-year option in April 2022.
