Phidarian Mathis is a defensive tackle for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League. He is 1.93 m tall and weighs 142 kg. He attended Franklin Parish High School before transferring to Neville High School. As a senior at Neville, he has made 41 tackles and seven sacks.
When he was a student at the University of Alabama, he participated in NCAA football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He redshirted his true freshman year of college in 2017 and took part in all 15 of the Crimson Tide’s games. After participating in 15 games, registering 18 tackles, and recovering a fumble, he was named to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman team.
He played in 12 games in 2019 and finished with 27 tackles and 0.5 stops for loss. The following season, he recorded 31 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, 3 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble. He was selected for both the conference coaches’ All-SEC Second Team and the AFCA’s second team All-American honor roll during his senior year at Alabama.
Overall, he had nine sacks, 12 tackles for loss, six quarterback pressures, and two pass breakups. Mathis announced his intent to enter the 2022 NFL Draft following the regular season, and the Washington Commanders picked him with the 47th overall pick in the second round. He committed to a four-year rookie contract on June 21, 2022.
