Melvin Gordon attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played for the Wisconsin Badgers football team from 2011 through 2014 under head coach Bret Bielema, Barry Alvarez, and Gary Andersen.
He began his professional career for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Gordon, who was a two-sport standout for the Red Devils in football and track at Mary D. Bradford High School, was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
As a junior, the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA) named him an honourable mention All-state and All-region performer after he accumulated 1,098 yards and 11 touchdowns on 99 carries and five receiving touchdowns.
He ran for 2,009 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior, earning first-team All-state honours from the WFCA and the Associated Press.
Gordon signed a four-year, $10.66 million deal with the Chargers that included a $6 million signing bonus and full guarantees. A fifth-year option was included in the agreement.
In the Chargers’ regular-season opener, Gordon was selected as the starting running back over seasoned players Branden Oliver and Danny Woodhead.
He made his first career start against the Detroit Lions on September 13, 2015, winning 33-28 with 14 carries for 51 running yards, three receptions for 16 receiving yards, and one fumble loss.
On April 27, 2022, Gordon re-signed with the Broncos on a one-year deal.
