Cornerback Damarri Deshon Mathis, who was born on April 12, 1999, plays for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. At Pittsburgh, he played collegiate football.
Florida’s Lakeland, where Mathis grew up, is home to Lakeland Senior High School. Initially committing to play college football at South Carolina, Mathis was a three-star prospect.
He later backed out of his commitment to South Carolina and signed with Pittsburgh.
As a freshman, Mathis participated in nine games, largely on special teams.
In his junior season, Mathis participated in all 13 of Pittsburgh’s games, including 10 starts. He finished the year with 23 tackles, 11 passes broken up, and 2 interceptions. He used a medical redshirt because of a shoulder issue that wasn’t related to football before his senior year.
Mathis was chosen honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference in his fifth season after participating in 13 games, recording 44 tackles, breaking up six passes, and recovering two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
He participated in the 2022 Senior Bowl following the conclusion of his college career.
The Denver Broncos selected Mathis in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 115th overall.
