Damarri Deshon Mathis is now a cornerback with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. At Pittsburgh, he played collegiate football.
The town of Lakeland, Florida, is home to Lakeland Senior High School, where Mathis was raised. When he initially decided to play collegiate football for South Carolina, Mathis was a three-star prospect.
Later, he broke his promise to them by signing with Pittsburgh rather than South Carolina.
As a freshman, Mathis participated in nine games, largely on special teams. During his junior season, Mathis started 10 of Pittsburgh’s 13 games and participated in all 13.
With 23 tackles, 11 passes broken up, and 2 interceptions in his final game of the year. Prior to his senior year, he used a medical redshirt due to a shoulder problem that wasn’t connected to football.
Mathis was chosen honorable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference in his fifth season after participating in 13 games, recording 44 tackles, breaking up six passes, and recovering two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
He participated in the 2022 Senior Bowl following the conclusion of his college career.
