Uwazurike went to Southfield-Lathrup High School in Lathrup Village, Michigan. While there, he was recognized by the Detroit Free Press as a member of the First Team All-North and was chosen for the Oakland Athletic Association All-Association in 2015.
He won the Most Valuable Defensive Player award for the team not once, but twice. As a senior, he recorded a total of 50 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and six sacks.
Uwazurike after high school attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He played four years of college football for the Iowa State Cyclones.
Because of his focus on schoolwork, Uwazurike sat out his first year as a player. During his redshirt freshman year, he earned a starting position and had 27 tackles, 5.0 TFL, and 1 sack. In his first full season as a starter, Uwazurike had 32 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.
This made him an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference pick. As a redshirt senior, he finished the season with 27 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three sacks, earning him honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition once again.
