Washington started his football career at Cherokee High School in Cherokee County, Georgia.
As a senior on the high school football team, Washington set a new record for the most single-season all-purpose yards with 2,265. He was the team’s most valuable player and the offensive player of the year in the region, and he was chosen first-team All-County, All-Region, and All-State.
Washington attended Samford University, where he played five seasons of college football for the Samford Bulldogs. He majored in Human Development and Family Science at the university.
During his first year as a true freshman, Washington saw action in all 12 games and recorded 19 receptions for 197 yards with a 10.4 average and one touchdown. He had a total of 22 rushes for 93 yards (4.2 yards per attempt) and two kick returns for 29 yards (14.5 avg.)
Washington participated in nine games, in which he made 14 receptions for 62 yards (averaging 4.4 yards per catch) and 17 rushes for 52 yards (3.1 avg.).
