He attended Dutchtown High School, where as a junior in 2014 he was named to the second team for District 5-5A, and in 2015 he was named to the first team.
At Louisiana State University, he was a member of the LSU Tigers football team. Despite redshirting his true freshman year, he participated in 11 games as a redshirt freshman, including six offensive contests. As the Tigers’ starting center going into his redshirt sophomore season, he started each of the team’s 13 games. With 973 total offensive snaps, he had the second-highest total on the squad.
In his 15 games as a junior in 2019, he played center, and with 1,037 total snaps, he topped the team in usage. For LSU, which won the Joe Moore Award for having the top offensive line in the nation, he served as the offensive line captain. He announced after the season that he would forgo his senior year and instead enter the 2020 NFL Draft. In December 2019, he earned a degree in sport management.
In the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selected Cushenberry with the 83rd overall choice. He signed up for the NFL on September 14, 2020. On November 8, 2022, he strained his groin and was placed on injured reserve.
