Jerick McKinnon participated in football and track at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Georgia. He was a quarterback, running back, and wide receiver in football.
He was selected for the first team of all-state quarterbacks by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
He was also selected Region VII AAAA Player of the Year and named first-team all-state by the Georgia Sports Writers Association. On the football field, he earned four letters for the Yellow Jackets and started each of his final three seasons.
He was a wide receiver on the squad that won the area title as a junior and went on to win MVP honours for the National Underclassmen Ultimate 100.
As a senior, he gained 1,300 more rushing yards and 1,500 passing yards, earning him the Cobb County Touchdown Club Quarterback of the Year award in 2009. McKinnon attended Georgia Southern University from 2010 to 2013.
On April 30, 2021, McKinnon and the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a one-year contract. On November 30, he was placed on injured reserve.
He became operational on January 1st, 2022. McKinnon scored his first rushing touchdown with Kansas City in the final game of the regular season against the Denver Broncos in Week 18. The Broncos were defeated by the Chiefs 28-24.
McKinnon had a day of 142 scrimmage yards and a receiving touchdown in the 42-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round. On June 14, 2022, he re-signed with the organization.
