There are just two numbers that have been officially retired by the Pittsburgh Steelers: Ernie Stautner’s No. 70 and Joe Greene’s No. 75 and there are a lot of unofficially retired numbers on the team.

No. 70: Ernie Stautner
Throughout his 14-year playing career, Stautner remained a Pirates fan favorite. One of the greatest defensive tackles in the history of the game. The franchise retired Stautner’s No. 70 as the first official number to be retired. His toughness and ability to play despite ailments earned him the nickname “Stahtner.” The year was 1969 when he was officially inducted into the Canton Walk of Fame
No. 75: Joe Greene
One of the greatest names in Pittsburgh Steelers history may be the four-time All-Pro linebacker. As a member of the Steel Curtain defense, he won four Super Bowls. The Steelers retired Greene’s number in 2014 after he was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. Greene was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the fourth overall choice in the 1969 NFL Draft. Despite being a top-five pick, Greene instantly turned into a steal after being drafted. Greene played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 13 seasons, making the Pro Bowl in 10 of his first 11 seasons.
