Cullen’s first coaching position was at the University of Richmond, where he served from 1992 until 1998. At Louisiana State University in 1999, he worked with the defensive line.
At Memphis University in 2001, he was the defensive line coach. He served as the defensive line coach at Indiana University from 2002 to 2003 before being elevated to the position of defensive coordinator in 2004. In 2005, he was a student at the university.

Joe Cullen Career History As A Coach
Detroit Lions
As a defensive line coach for the Detroit Lions in 2006, Cullen was promoted to assistant head coach. Four Lions players achieved career-high sack totals under Cullen’s leadership.
Idaho State
Cullen became the defensive line coach at Idaho State University in 2009.
Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Cullen as their defensive line coach in 2010 and he has been with the team ever since. The Jaguars finished sixth in total yards allowed and eighth in rushing yards per carry under Cullen.
Cleveland Browns
As a defensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns, Cullen was hired in 2013. That year, the Browns had 41 sacks and allowed only 3.9 yards per run on the ground. Those were the two best results in the franchise’s previous 18 years of existence.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
When Lovie Smith took over as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014, Cullen was hired as his defensive line coach. The Bucs ranked ninth in sacks and tackles for loss in those two seasons.
Baltimore Ravens
Under head coach John Harbaugh, Cullen was hired by the Baltimore Ravens as the team’s defensive line coach in 2016.
