Joshua Winckowski is an American Major League Baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox (MLB).
Winckowski joins Jeter Downs (No. 7) and Connor Seabold (No. 12) on this list of players who did not begin their careers with the Red Sox organization.
Instead, Winckowski was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays, a division foe. He was drafted in the 15th round out of Florida high school.
He had committed to a junior college rather than a four-year university, and after getting drafted, he decided to go straight to the professionals.
After displaying excellent control in 2018, Winckowski’s walk rate increased somewhat, but his strikeout stuff remained strong, and batters struggled to square up the righty, resulting in a 2.32 ERA through 13 starts and a midseason promotion to High-A Dunedin.
He basically kept doing what he’d been doing since the beginning of the previous season, finishing the 2019 season with a 3.19 ERA in 10 starts and one relief appearance.
He pitched most of his season at Double-A Portland, where he had a 4.14 ERA and a 4.02 FIP in 21 appearances at the age of 23. (20 starts).
It wasn’t a fantastic performance, particularly when compared to 2018 and 2019, but it was a competent outing in which he held his own.
