Ral Ramón Mondes Avelino is a former politician and baseball player from the Dominican Republic. Mondes spent 13 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he made his MLB debut in 1993.
He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 1994, a two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, and an MLB All-Star.
Mondes, who is known for his mix of power and speed, has twice been a member of the 30–30 club. Over the course of his career, he led MLB right fielders in assists three times.
Mondes launched a political career after baseball, winning the election to the Dominican Chamber of Deputies in 2006.
He was elected mayor of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, in 2010 for a six-year term. Mondes was sentenced to eight years in jail in 2017 on corruption charges stemming from his time as mayor.
Raúl Mondesí Career
Mondes was recruited as an amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988.
In 1990, he was named to the Pioneer League All-Star team after hitting .303 with 30 stolen bases for the Great Falls Dodgers.
Mondes was dealt by the Dodgers to the Toronto Blue Jays on November 8, 1999, along with Pedro Borbón Jr., for Shawn Green and minor league player Jorge Nunez.
After tearing ligaments in his right elbow during a game on July 21, he only participated in 96 games in his first season with Toronto, necessitating season-ending surgery.
Mondesi was elected to the Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Deputies in May 2006, representing his native province of San Cristóbal, after running on the Dominican Liberation Party’s list.
After disagreements with the government over humanitarian relief to be delivered to his area during Tropical Storm Noel in November 2007, he switched sides and joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party.
On May 16, 2010, he was elected mayor of his hometown for a six-year tenure.

Adalberto Mondes (previously Raul Mondes Jr.), Mondes’ son, is also a professional baseball player. In the 2015 World Series, he made his MLB debut for the Kansas City Royals.
