In Nipomo, California, McNeil attended Nipomo High School. He participated in baseball, basketball, and golf. McNeil played high school basketball for three years and averaged 17 points per game as a senior.
McNeil concentrated on his golf career until his dismal performance in the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship when he switched his attention to baseball.
