Starling Javier Marte is a Major League Baseball outfielder for the New York Mets.
He has played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins, and Oakland Athletics in the Major League Baseball (MLB). With the Pirates in 2012, he made his MLB debut.
Marte was born and raised in the suburbs of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s capital. His grandma raised him after his mother died when he was nine years old.
He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007 and spent most of his time in the minors as a centerfielder.
Marte had a .315 hitting average in 60 games for the Pirates’ Class A club, the Bradenton Marauders, in 2010. That season, he hit 16 doubles and five triples while also swiping 22 bases.
Marte played in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Marte was an Eastern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star, a Baseball America Double-A All-Star, a Topps Double-A All-Star, and a Milb.com organization All-Star in 2011 while playing for the Altoona Curve.
Marte was selected the EL’s player of the week on August 15, 2011. Marte was also selected Eastern League Rookie of the Year and earned the Eastern League Batting Title with a .332 batting average.
On November 18, 2011, Marte was added to the Pirates’ 40-man roster.
In February 2012, Marte was placed 73rd on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects list and 56th on Baseball Prospectus’s Top 101 Prospects list.
Marte was named an International League Mid-Season All-Star in 2012 while playing for the Indianapolis Indians. Marte was selected as the International League player of the week on July 2, 2012.
Marte and his late wife, Noelia Brazoban, have three children: sons Starling Jr. and Smerling, and daughter Tiana.
His wife, Brazoban died in the hospital in May 2020 after suffering a heart attack while awaiting surgery for a broken ankle.
