Luis Castillo is a Dominican professional baseball second baseman. He played in Major League Baseball for the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, and Minnesota Twins from 1996 through 2010.
As a non-drafted free agent, Castillo was signed by the Florida Marlins. In 1994, he made his professional baseball debut with the Gulf Coast Marlins of the Gulf Coast League.
He also established a Marlins short-season record for most stolen bases, with 31. In 1995, he was called up to the Class-A Midwest League Kane County Cougars and was named to the All-Star squad.
In July, he suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to miss the remainder of the season. During that season, he had the highest batting average (.326) and second-most number of stolen bases among all Marlins players.
When Castillo was called up to the Marlins midseason in 1996, he made his major league debut on August 8 of that year. It was in a game against the New York Mets in the 10th inning that he hit his first major league hit.
As a member of both the Eastern League All-Stars and the All-Stars for the playoffs, he was honored.
