Santillan was a student at Arlington’s Seguin High School. He has committed to Texas Tech University, where he will play college baseball. In the second round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, he was taken by the Cincinnati Reds.
Santillan made his professional debut with the Arizona League Reds, where he spent his entire first professional season, going 0–2 with a 5.03 ERA in 19+23 innings pitched.
He pitched in 15 games for both the Billings Mustangs and the Dayton Dragons in 2016, with a combined 3–3 record, 5.19 ERA, and 1.43 WHIP in 15 starts for both organizations, then returned to Dayton in 2017 with a 9–8 record and 3.38 ERA in 25 appearances (24 starts).
During the season, he was promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos from the Daytona Tortugas. He went 10–7 with a 3.08 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 26 combined starts with the two teams.
He went 2–8 with a 4.84 ERA in 21 starts for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 2019, striking out 92 batters in 102+13 innings.
After the 2019 season, Santillan was added to the Reds’ 40–man roster. He did not play in a minor league game in 2020 since the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Santillan got promoted to the top leagues for the first time on June 12, 2021.
Santillan made his Major League Baseball debut the next day, pitching 4+23 innings of one-run work with 5 strikeouts against the Colorado Rockies.
