On April 5, 1998, José Israel Barrero was born in Havana, Cuba, and is a Cuban professional baseball shortstop who now plays for the Cincinnati Reds of the Major League Baseball (MLB). Prior to changing his name to José Barrero in 2021, he was known by the given name Jose Garca.
A member of the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup-winning Cuban national baseball team, Barrero also competed in the Industriales’ Cuban National Series. After being designated as an international free agent by the Cincinnati Reds in June 2017, he signed with them.
After signing with the Dayton Dragons, Barrero made his pro debut in 2018. The Daytona Tortugas were his team for the 2019 season, and he then went on to play in the Arizona Fall League following that. For the 2020 season, the Reds have invited him to their Spring Training facility in Cincinnati.
Against the Milwaukee Brewers, Barrero made his Major League Baseball debut on August 27, 2020. A year after hitting.194 with no home runs and only two RBIs in 24 games for Cincinnati, he signed with the Chattanooga Lookouts and began the 2020 season.
