Coonrod played three years of college baseball with the Missouri Valley Conference’s Southern Illinois Salukis after graduating from high school.
In 2012, he was a member of the Quincy Gems, and in 2013, he was a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
Coonrod was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants.
He began his professional career with the Arizona League Giants in 2014 and progressed through the Giants’ farm system until making his major league debut in 2019.
During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, he struggled, allowing moreover one run per inning pitched and posting a 9.82 ERA in 18 games.
Coonrod was traded throughout the winter and began 2021 as a reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies.
After seeing Coonrod play at the State Journal-Register Baseball Classic, Dan Callahan, the coach of the Southern Illinois Salukis of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), recruited him.
On February 18, 2012, Coonrod earned the win in his college baseball debut, pitching two innings in the Salukis’ 4–2 victory over North Florida.
Coonrod went 3–5 with a 4.64 ERA and 54 strikeouts in his freshman season at SIU, pitching in 18 games and 64 innings.
He pitched collegiate summer baseball for the Quincy Gems of the Prospect League that summer, going 2–1 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts and striking out 18 batters in 20 innings.
