Making his Major League Baseball debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016 and bouncing between the major league and minor league levels for several seasons, Zach Eflin previously played for the San Diego Padres.
In return for all-star outfielder Matt Kemp, Tim Federowicz, and cash, the Padres sent Eflin, Joe Wieland, and Yasmani Grandal to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In a trade that sent Jimmy Rollins, the longest-tenured player in all of Philadelphia sports, the Phillies’ all-time hits leader, and the franchise’s face for more than a decade, to Los Angeles, Eflin arrived with Tom Windle from the Dodgers in less than 24 hours.
The Phillies had targeted Eflin after hearing from Gorman Heimueller, a former Phillies instructor now working with the Padres, who stated Eflin “had a lead-pipe sinker and the makings to throw at the top of a rotation once he could grasp the slider.”
