Familia Jeurys Mojica was born on October 10, 1989, and is a Dominican Major League Baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (MLB). He has previously played for the New York Mets and the Oakland A’s.
Familia was signed as a non-drafted free agency by the Mets in 2007. In 2012, he made his MLB debut. Familia was named the Mets’ closer during the 2015 season.
In 2016, he was chosen as an MLB All-Star. In July 2018, the Mets traded him to the Oakland Athletics, who signed him to a three-year contract after the 2018 season.
Familia also finished building a new house for his parents in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2015. The house’s construction had begun in 2014, but it was put on hold when Familia decided to pay for surgery to cure a leg problem that had afflicted his father since boyhood.
On October 31, 2016, Familia was arrested in Fort Lee, New Jersey on a domestic violence charge. Due to a lack of evidence, the case was withdrawn on December 15. His October arrest was also expunged from his record.
On June 12, 2015, Familia’s son, Jeurys Jr., was born to his fiancée, Bianca Rivas, when the older Familia salvaged a victory over the Atlanta Braves.
