Joseph Abel Romero (born September 9, 1996), is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Romero was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth round (107th pick overall) of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. After signing, Romero made his professional debut with the Williamsport Crosscutters. He spent the whole season there, going 2–2 with a 2.56 ERA in ten games.
In 2015, he pitched in the Arizona League and for the South Bend Cubs, with a combined 2–6 record and 4.68 ERA in 17 games (11 starts), and in 2016, he appeared for both South Bend and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, compiling a combined 4–1 record and 3.25 ERA in 30 relief appearances.
Romero made his major league debut on August 21, 2020, while the Phillies were on the road in Atlanta. With the Braves leading 11–2, he pitched the eighth inning. Romero retired all three hitters he faced. In 12 appearances, Romero concluded his debut season with a 7.59 ERA.
Romero stated on May 19, 2021, that he will have Tommy John surgery, thereby terminating his 2021 season. Romero had a 7.00 ERA with 8 strikeouts in 11 games.
