Who is Ranger Suárez?
José Suárez is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball. Suárez, a native of Pie de Cuesta, was signed as an international free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012.
A drug suspension cut short his first season in the Venezuelan Summer League (VSL), but he returned to pitch in the VSL for two more seasons.
He began to gain the attention of the Phillies organization in 2014, after giving up only one walk for the entire season, and he was promoted to the Rookie League the following year.
In 2016, Suárez’s stock continued to improve after he pitched a no-hitter for the Williamsport Crosscutters.
He progressed through the Phillies’ farm system in 2017 and 2018, seeing time in Double-A and Triple-A as a starting pitcher with a strong strikeout rate.
Suárez debuted in the major leagues in 2018 when the Philadelphia Phillies were in desperate need of a starter. At the start of the 2019 season, he was demoted to Triple-A, but by the end of June, he was a regular with the Phillies.
He was mostly utilized as a reliever that season, although he was in the running for a starting rotation spot in 2020. After catching COVID-19 during training camp, Suárez was forced to miss most of the season.
In 2021, he returned to the organization as a long reliever, pitching a string of successful middle innings in a roster that was short on depth, before being promoted to the rotation at the trade deadline.
