Jacob Tyler Realmuto is a catcher in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was a member of the Miami Marlins between 2014 and 2018.
Realmuto is the son of an athletic family from Del City, Oklahoma. As he grew older, he participated in a variety of sports, helping Carl Albert High School’s baseball and football teams win state championships.
Realmuto started his high school baseball career as a shortstop, but a scout with the Miami Marlins persuaded him to switch to catcher full-time.
Realmuto was drafted in the third round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins, and he decided to sign with the organization over a collegiate baseball commitment to Oklahoma State.
He spent the following few seasons in the Marlins’ farm system, where he developed great connections with pitchers and worked on catching base stealers.
Realmuto debuted in MLB in June 2014, following the concussion of starting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
In 2015, Realmuto took over as the Marlins’ starting catcher when Saltalamacchia was designated for assignment.
Realmuto’s strength and quickness helped him earn his first All-Star berth in 2018. Realmuto’s first Silver Slugger Award came the same year.
Realmuto was dealt to the Phillies by the Marlins in February 2019, and he was named to his second All-Star team and won the Silver Slugger Award.
Realmuto also won his first Gold Glove Award of his career for his 2019 season performance.
Realmuto’s Phillies teammates and supporters began chanting “Sign J. T.” when he became a free agent following the 2020 season.
Realmuto signed a five-year, $115.5 million contract with the Phillies in January 2021, the highest for any catcher in MLB history.
