Jacob Barnes is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers.
Barnes, a right-handed reliever, signed a minor-league contract with the Detroit Tigers on Dec. 1 and was invited to spring training.
More than a dozen teams approached the six-year MLB veteran. Before signing his contract, he spoke with the Tigers’ analytics staff and minor-league coaches.
Barnes, on the other hand, is a pitcher the Tigers brought in for a specific reason. Because of his fastball-slider combo, the general office, analytics department, and coaching staff believe he can make an impact.
Barnes has appeared in 229 games for the Milwaukee Brewers (2016-19), Kansas City Royals (2019), Los Angeles Angels (2020), New York Mets (2021), and Toronto Blue Jays over the course of six seasons (2021). In 2262 innings, he has a 4.61 ERA with 99 walks and 242 strikeouts.
In 149 games from 2016 to 2018, Barnes had a 3.54 ERA and 9.3 strikeouts per 9 innings.
He was claimed off waivers by the Royals in August 2019 after the Brewers removed him from the 40-man roster. In 33 games that season, he posted a 7.44 ERA.
