Infesta, a local club, was where Fernandes started his childhood career.
Fernandes was offered a youth contract with Porto’s academy as a child, but he instead chose to train with local rivals Boavista, who provided him with transportation to training because his parents were unable to drive him to Porto on a daily basis.
Fernandes spent most of his youth football career with Boavista, beginning as a center-back until being converted to an attacking midfielder at the age of 15 after a loan to Pasteleira.
He moved to Novara, Italy on August 27, 2012.
After suffering from homesickness and having difficulty learning Italian, Fernandes struggled in his new life in Italy at first.
After his partner relocated to Italy, Fernandes soon picked up the language and settled in, earning the nicknames “Maradona of Novara” and “Mini Rui Costa” in the process.
Fernandes was promoted to the main squad in Serie B after only a few weeks with the youth teams, and he went on to participate in slightly more than half of the league games during the 2012–13 season, helping his team to fifth place and the promotion play-offs.
Inter Milan and Juventus were interested in signing Fernandes in the summer of 2013, but he chose to sign a co-ownership deal with Udinese, which promised him a first-team opportunity.
On November 3, he made his Serie A debut, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 0–3 home loss to Inter Milan. In a 3–3 tie with Napoli on December 7, 2013, Fernandes scored his first league goal.
He scored once more in the 1–1 tie in the second meeting between the two teams.
