With a groin issue that forced him to leave Wednesday’s game, Detroit Tigers left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin will be out for “at least a couple of days,” according to manager AJ Hinch.
Chafin checked into the TigerTown complex in Lakeland on Thursday for treatment. With a hamstring issue, outfielder Derek Hill, who is battling with Victor Reyes for a spot on the Opening Day roster, will be out for a comparable amount of time.
“We’re going to wait at least a couple of days on each of those,” Hinch said on Thursday.
Before the game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater on Wednesday, Chafin, 31, complained of groin tightness. He was meant to be a reliever. With cramping, Hill, 26, was forced to leave Wednesday’s game.
“It’s sore. If you get a cramp, the next day is usually fairly painful “Hill’s injury was mentioned by Hinch. “That’s why we’ll have to wait a few days to see if it’s just muscle discomfort or more serious damage. Today he was somewhat achy.”
Chafin, who signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Tigers in mid-March, is anticipated to play a key role in Hinch’s bullpen as a high-leverage reliever.
In 71 bullpen appearances for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics, he had a 1.83 ERA, 19 walks, and 64 strikeouts.
Chafin’s status for Opening Day is unknown, according to Hinch.
“We’ll always have other options,” Hinch said, “but it’s tough to speculate until we get more facts.” “I know he was upbeat today, which is a positive sign, but I’m going to hold off on my excitement until he’s back on the mound.”
