Angel De Jess, a Dominican pitcher with the Detroit Tigers, was born on February 13, 1997.
De Jess became an international free agent in May 2016 and signed with the Detroit Tigers. Following the 2021 season, he was added to the Tigers’ 40-man roster.
De Jess was promoted to the active roster on April 20, 2022, after being called up from Toledo.
On Saturday afternoon, Detroit Tigers rookie right-hander Angel De Jesus made his Major League debut, pitching two scoreless innings.
He was packing his things for Triple-A Toledo minutes later.
The Tigers needed a roster place for another pitcher to make his MLB debut, thus the trade was expected.
Beau Brieske, a right-handed pitcher from Toledo, has been selected to start Game 2 of the Tigers’ doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.
The Tigers moved reliever Kyle Funkhouser to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Brieske. That means he won’t be allowed to return to duty until June 5th at the earliest.
Finally, for the second game of the doubleheader, the Tigers named outfielder Daz Cameron to serve as their extra player.
De Jesus, a Dominican Republic native, is a hard-throwing pitcher who struck out 11.1 batters per nine innings in 2021 with Erie and Toledo. To avoid being taken in the Rule 5 Draft, he was added to the 40-man roster this winter.
In the ninth inning, he walked two runners after pitching a 1-2-3 eighth inning. In the end, he pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three batters in his debut, giving him something to work with the next time he visits Detroit.
