On October 6, 1997, Dave and Jenny Wentz welcomed a son called Joey Wentz, who is presently a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. When they were both in second grade, Riley Pint was his first friend.
Wentz attended Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kansas. He was named Sunflower League Player of the Year in both his junior and senior seasons.
Wentz won the 2015 Junior Home Drive Derby during the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game after hitting a 543-foot home run (166 m).
On July 31, 2019, the Detroit Tigers acquired Wentz and Travis Demeritte in exchange for Shane Greene. In his first full season at the AA level, Wentz went 7–8 with a 4.20 ERA in 128+23 innings. He was added to the Tigers’ 40-man roster after the 2020 season.
He had Tommy John surgery in March of 2020 and missed the whole season. He was sent to Triple-A to begin the 2021 season.
While recuperating from surgery, Wentz pitched in 18 games at the A and AA levels, finishing 0–7 with a 5.25 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 72 innings.
