Robert Morse was an American actor and singer, best known as the star of both the 1961 original Broadway production, for which he won a Tony Award.
Morse was born and raised in the Massachusetts town of Newton. He met Henry Lasker, a theater instructor when he was a student at Newton High School, and he became his inspiration.
Morse moved to New York City after graduating from high school to seek a career in acting.
He went there to join his older brother Richard, who was studying acting at the prestigious ‘Neighborhood Playhouse.’
Morse made his stage debut in the musical ‘On the Town’ (1944– 1946) after auditioning for a few roles.
He began working in films and television shows about a decade later. His first television part was in the soap opera ‘The Secret Storm’ in 1994, and his first film role was in ‘The Proud and Profane’ two years later (1956).
Despite sporadic employment as a screen actor, Morse remained devoted to Broadway, collecting numerous accolades for his work in musicals.
