Grossman was born in San Diego, California, but grew up in Cypress, Texas, where he attended Cy-Fair High School and played varsity baseball for four years from 2005 to 2008.

For the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was voted Minor League Player of the Year.

Grossman signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on January 5, 2021.

He also had career highs in at-bats (557), home runs (23), RBI (67), and stolen bases (seven) (20). He became the seventh player in Tigers history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season.
