Derek Jerome Hill is a Major League Baseball center fielder for the Detroit Tigers in the United States. Hill was picked in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Tigers, and he debuted in the big leagues in 2020.
Hill spent his childhood in Des Moines, Iowa, with his mother, and his summers in Northern California with his father, where he played baseball for select teams.
He relocated to Sacramento in 2011 and enrolled at Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove, California. In his senior season, he hit .500 (47-for-94), with 11 doubles, seven triples, 30 runs batted in (RBI), and 29 stolen bases.
Hill was selected 23rd overall in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers.
On June 11, the Tigers announced that they had reached an agreement with Hill on a two-year contract that includes a $2 million signing bonus.
He had committed to play college baseball at the University of Oregon previously. Hill played in 47 games with both the GCL Tigers and the Connecticut Tigers in 2014, batting .208 with two home runs and 14 RBIs.
Hill’s 2015 season with the West Michigan Whitecaps, in which he batted.238 with a.619 OPS and 25 stolen bases, was cut short after only 53 games due to injuries.
Hill began the 2017 season with West Michigan and was promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in late August after hitting .285 with a .812 OPS. He only appeared in nine games for them, batting .194 in those nine games.
Following the 2019 season, Hill was added to the Tigers’ 40–man roster. Following a season-ending injury to JaCoby Jones, the Tigers recalled Hill on September 2, 2020.
On September 4, 2020, he made his MLB debut as a defensive substitute. In 15 games for the Tigers in 2020, he batted.091 with no home runs or RBI.
