With four home runs, 28 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases as a junior, Grayson High School made it to the Georgia Class 6A semi-finals of the baseball tournament.

A preseason All-American by Rawlings and Perfect Game, Meadows hit.535 with 14 doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 28 RBIs in his senior year.

Grayson University, where he played alongside Wayne Gallman and Robert Nkemdiche, also had Meadows as a running back, wide receiver, and punter.

Meadows was widely regarded as one of the most promising players who could be selected in the Major League Baseball draft in 2013.

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally selected him in the first round, picking him up with the ninth overall pick.

Meadows had a scholarship offer to attend Clemson University to play college baseball for the Clemson Tigers, but he decided against taking the offer and instead signed with the Pirates instead. He received a signing bonus of $3,029,600 three weeks after the draft for making this decision.
