When Major League Baseball teams originally created their rosters in the first week of July, Alec Bettinger was a contender for Milwaukee’s pool.
Baseball America listed the right-hander as Milwaukee’s 20th best prospect heading into the season.
Before the rest of the minor leaguers were set to arrive in March, he traveled on February 4 to Milwaukee’s spring training facility in Arizona for some extra work with the Brewers’ minor-league staff.
Bettinger went to Norfolk to continue working out with his former University of Virginia teammate Connor Jones when the coronavirus pandemic shut down spring training in mid-March.
Bettinger led Double-A Biloxi in innings pitched (146.1), improved his strikeout rate to 9.68 per nine innings, and cut his walk rate to 2.16 in 2019. In 26 starts, he had a 5-7 record and a 3.44 ERA.
He was set to begin the season with Triple-A San Antonio.
Alec Bettinger becomes the third player from the area to be selected for an MLB player pool.
The others are Hylton graduate Andre Scrubb (Houston Astros) and Battlefield graduate Nick Wells (Washington Nationals). Scrubb, who pitched with Bettinger in high school, has since been promoted to the major leagues.
