The Milwaukee Brewers swapped out left-handed pitchers, sending Eric Lauer to Triple-A Nashville and giving minor league signee Hoby Milner a chance to return to the big leagues:
Lauer has pitched much better in his big league opportunities this year than he did in 2020, earning two starts in four outings with a 2.81 ERA in 16.0 innings pitched.
He’s struck out 16 batters with only two walks this season, and he appears to have impressed Milwaukee with his performance.
With many off-days coming up for Lauer, manager Craig Counsell explained to reporters that the decision to send him back down to the minors was made to get him back into a starting role and keep him on a regular routine.
The Brewers will use a six-man rotation for a run of games coming up, and Lauer is one of the leading possibilities to start those games. The manager remarked, “I think Eric is in a pretty good position.”
Hoby Milner has appeared in each of the previous four seasons at the highest level of the game.
He has a 4.53 ERA in 74 appearances and 55.2 innings pitched, but after posting a 2.01 ERA in 37 games for the Phillies as a rookie in 2017.
He has surrendered 21 earned runs in 24.1 innings (7.77 ERA) while bouncing back and forth between the minor leagues from 2018 to 2020 with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, and Anaheim.
This move offers the Brewers a fresh arm for the bullpen tonight, and allows Counsell another left-handed pitcher to play matchups with after Lauer tossed 55 pitches in 3.0 innings of relief last night.
Milner still has two minor league options, according to Fangraphs, so he might be a bullpen shuttle candidate for the rest of the season if he can keep his 40-man roster position.
