Devin Terran Williams is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2019, he made his MLB debut
Williams studied at Christian Brothers College High School until the second year of his sophomore year, when he switched to Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Missouri.
In the second round of the 2013 MLB draft, the Milwaukee Brewers picked him with the 54th overall pick. Instead of enrolling at the University of Missouri, he chose to sign with the Brewers for a $1.35 million signing bonus.
Williams tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow during spring training in 2017. He missed the full season due to Tommy John surgery.
He was selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game for the Brewers in 2019.
Williams has two primary pitches: a 4-seam fastball and a circle changeup with screwball-like movement while rotating the ball off the ring finger during release, which is similar to a cricket leg-spinner bowling a googly, but at a much faster speed of around 85 mph and a very high spin rate of 2852 rpm.
In addition, he has a cutter and sinker that he rarely uses. He upped his use of the changeup in 2020, owing to its enhanced movement, and he frequently utilized it as a strikeout pitch.
Rob Friedman gave him the nickname “Airbender” for his changeup.
