Lorenzo Cain’s Career With The Kansas City Royals
He was traded to the Kansas City Royals on December 18, 2010, along with Alcides Escobar, Jeremy Jeffress, and Jake Odorizzi, for Zack Greinke and Yuniesky Betancourt.
Before the start of the 2011 MLB season, Cain was sent down to the Royals’ AAA affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers, where he played six games in his first season.
The Royals announced on February 18, 2012 that they have signed Cain to a one-year contract for the 2012 season. The deal’s financial specifics were not disclosed.
Cain started the season as the starter in center field, with Jarrod Dyson serving as the backup. Dyson began receiving more starts in late June.
Cain was placed on the injured list on August 10 due to a strained left oblique. Cain had 14 more starts for the season when he returned on September 4, seven in right field and seven in the center.
Cain hit .251/.310/.348 in 115 games (106 starts), with four home runs, 46 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases.
Cain hit .301/.339/.412 in 133 games in 2014, with five home runs (one inside the park), four triples, 29 doubles, 28 stolen bases, 46 RBIs, and 55 runs scored.
His batting average and stolen base total both ranked eighth in the American League.
He had twice as many infield hits as the previous year, thanks to his training with Al Hobson, the track coach at Kansas City Kansas Community College, to increase his base-running sprint speed.
The Royals haven’t made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 1985.
Cain’s defensive prowess in center field, which included four stunning catches in two games in the Division Series, was generally credited with helping the Royals sweep the heavily favored Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Cain added another remarkable extra-base hit-stealing grab to his playoff highlight reel in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Baltimore Orioles, this time of a J. J. Hardy line drive to right center field in the 6th inning to maintain a 4–4 tie.
