In his professional debut season of 2017, he went 4–4 with a 4.02 ERA and 34 strikeouts across 53 innings for the DSL Yankees and the GCL Yankees. During the 2018 season, Contreras pitched for the Staten Island Yankees and the Charleston RiverDogs, going 0–2 with a 2.42 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 63 innings. The Yankees added him to their 40-man roster after the 2020 season.
With a right forearm strain, he was out for over two months, from June 30 to September 1. He went 3–2 with a 2.64 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 58 innings for the Altoona Curve and the Indianapolis Indians in 2021 minor league baseball.
Contreras’ contract was selected to the active roster on September 29, 2021, and he made his MLB debut that night against the Chicago Cubs.
Contreras, Miguel Yajure, Maikol Escotto, and Canaan Smith were transferred to the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 24, 2021. Contreras was chosen for the All-Star Futures Game in June of 2021.
