This past offseason, the Pittsburgh Pirates made a transaction that has the potential to be one of the best the team has ever made.
In exchange for a four-player prospect package, they shipped right-handed starter, Jameson Taillon, to the New York Yankees.
FanGraphs has revised its prospect rankings, making things even more encouraging. Roansy Contreras, one of the Bucs’ re-acquired prospects, has rocketed to the top of FanGraphs’ prospect rankings.
In their original rankings, the outstanding right-hander went from a 40+ future value grade prospect to a 50 FV grade prospect. Contreras is presently one of the finest prospects in baseball, ranking #104 in potential value.
This year’s work by Contreras has been fantastic. The velocity of his fastball has increased significantly. He averaged 90-94 MPH in 2019 with the Yankees, with a peak speed of 96 MPH.
This year, he has worked in the 96-98 MPH area, which is closer to his normal speed.
He’s thrown harder than ever before, and his four-seamer has always had good spin. His breaking ball is another strong pitch that has improved this season, and his change-up is another above-average offering.
Contreras’s increased arsenal is backed up by statistics. Contreras has a 2.18 ERA, 1.99 FIP, and 0.88 WHIP over 33 innings pitched at Double-A Altoona.
He is one of only eight Double-A pitchers with a sub-2.00 FIP and at least 20 innings pitched. He also has a 2.68 xFIP, which places him 12th in the league.
