On January 24, 2021, New York traded Jameson Taillon to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Contreras, Miguel Yajure, Maikol Escotto, and Canaan Smith. Contreras was picked for the All-Star Futures Game in June of 2021.
A right forearm strain kept him out of action for over two months, from June 30 to September 1.
