Andrew Knapp is an American professional baseball catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds.
Knapp, who spent the previous five seasons with the Phillies across the river, was in camp with the Reds this spring but was released after learning he wouldn’t make the roster.
Knapp was formerly considered one of the Phillies’ top prospects, making Baseball America’s Top 100 list (No. 96) in the 2015-16 off-season.
However, despite a strong rookie season and a fruitful streak of 89 plate appearances during the abbreviated 2020 season, he has yet to consistently produce average or better results in the Majors.
Knapp has a.214/.314/.322 batting line in 827 MLB plate appearances, all with the Phillies.
Knapp has drawn walks in 11.9 percent of his career plate appearances, and while a large portion of those has come while batting eighth in front of the pitcher, he has walk rates of more than 11 percent even when batting sixth and seventh.
