Tsutsugo spent the final six weeks of the 2021 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates after being released by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tsutsugo was a fan favorite with the Pirates because he did nothing but slug his way to the top. In 2022, the Japanese slugger will still be with the Pirates.
Last season, Tsutusgo appeared in 144 plate appearances for the Pirates. Tsutsugo had a .268/.374/.535 slash line in 144 plate appearances.
He walked 10.4 percent of the time, had a 134 wRC+, an ISO of .268, and slugged 8 home runs to go along with an 11.8 percent extra-base hit rate.
Tsutsugo’s .299 batting average on balls in play was another encouraging indication (BAbip). This is a league-average BAbip, indicating that he did not benefit from bad luck or bad defense against him.
His 22.9 percent strikeout rate was also not a worry. While it was a little higher than you’d like to see, it was not alarmingly high.
Tsutsugo might make an impact for the Pirates as a corner outfielder or first baseman in 2022. His most likely position on the squad would be as the designated hitter.
The National League is widely likely to implement the DH as part of the new CBA. Tsutsugo could become the Pirate DH as a result of this.
The Pirates will have to cut two players off their 40-man roster. Tsutsugo and Quintana must be added to the 40-man roster.
