Joseph Israel Barlow (born September 28, 1995) is an American Major League Baseball pitcher for the Texas Rangers (MLB). In 2021, he made his MLB debut.
Riverton High School in Riverton, Utah was Barlow’s alma mater. In 2015 and 2016, he played collegiate baseball for Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Barlow was a catcher his rookie year, hitting.202 with zero home runs and 13 RBI. Barlow appeared as a pitcher and catcher in his sophomore season. With 14 RBI, he’s hitting.208. Barlow finished 3–3 with a 2.12 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 46+23 innings thrown in 13 games pitched (7 starts).
Texas picked Barlow’s contract and promoted him to the major leagues for the first time on June 23, 2021. The next day, he made his MLB debut, tossing a scoreless inning against the Oakland Athletics.
In the game, he also struck out A’s infielder Jed Lowrie for his first career strikeout. On August 2, Barlow set a Rangers franchise record by becoming the first pitcher to strike out eight consecutive batters faced.
Barlow served as the Rangers’ closer for the remainder of the 2021 season. He was 0–2 with a 1.55 ERA, 27 strikeouts, and 11 saves in 29 innings in 2021. He was selected as the Rangers’ Pitcher of the Month for September/October.
