In Royse City, Texas, Hearn attended Royse City High School. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 22nd round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft after his senior year.
Rather than signing, he elected to play college baseball at San Jacinto College. He was later picked in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds, but he did not sign.
After a second season at San Jacinto, he was selected in the 25th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins. Instead of signing, he decided to transfer to Oklahoma Baptist University.
He was picked in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Washington Nationals after one year at Oklahoma Baptist.
Hearn pitched in 12 games for both the rookie GCL Nationals and the Class A Short Season Auburn Doubledays in 2015, going 1–5 with a 3.56 earned run average (ERA) (11 starts).
He began 2016 with the GCL Nationals before being promoted to the Hagerstown Suns of Class A.
The Nationals traded Hearn and Felipe Vázquez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Mark Melancon on July 30, 2016. The balance of the season was spent with the Class A West Virginia Power.
He went 2–1 with a 2.44 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 51.2 innings thrown across the Nationals, Doubledays, and Suns in 18 games (7 starts).
Hearn spent the whole 2017 season with the Bradenton Marauders of Class A Advanced, going 4–6 with a 4.12 ERA in 19 games (18 starts).
He started the season with the Double-A Altoona Curve, where he was named to the Eastern League All-Star team.
