John Edward King is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Texas Rangers.
King went to Sugar Land’s William P. Clements High School. In 2014 and 2015, he attended Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, where he played college baseball.
He subsequently went on to play for the University of Houston Cougars for two years (2016 and 2017). During his senior season, he tore the UCL in his left elbow but continued to pitch despite the injury.
The Texas Rangers selected him in the 10th round (314th overall) of the 2017 MLB draft, and he signed with them for a $10,000 signing bonus.
On July 5, 2017, King underwent Tommy John surgery after signing his contract.
He rehabbed for the bulk of the 2018 season, returning in September to play one game for the Rookie-level Arizona League’s AZL Rangers and three games for the Class A Short Season Northwest League’s Spokane Indians.
To begin the 2019 season, he was assigned to the Hickory Crawdads of the Class A South Atlantic League, where he went 12–2 with a 3.42 ERA in 26+13 innings.
On May 10, he was promoted to the Down East Wood Ducks of the Carolina League’s Class A Advanced, where he went 2–4 with a 2.03 ERA in 71 innings.
King’s contract was selected to the active roster on September 4, 2020, and he made his main league debut that same day against the Seattle Mariners.
King went 1–0 with a 6.10 ERA and 9 strikeouts in 10+13 innings for Texas in 2020. In 46 innings for Texas in 2021, King was 7–5 with a 3.52 ERA and 40 strikeouts.
In July, King was placed on the IL, and in September 2021, he underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.
