Jonah Heim, the Athletics’ ninth-ranked prospect, is headed to Texas, where he will join Jose Trevino, No. 78 overall prospect Sam Huff, and No. 15 Rangers prospect David Garcia in the catching stable.

Overall, Texas landed a designated hitter in Davis, who hit .200 last year and is entering his ninth Major League season; right-hander Dane Acker, Oakland’s fourth-round pick out of the University of Oklahoma in last summer’s draft; and right-hander Dane Acker, Oakland’s fourth-round pick out of the University of Oklahoma in last summer’s draft. Andrus and catcher Aramis Garcia were traded to Oakland.

 

Heim is being traded for the third time in his career. Heim was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of a New York high school, and he was traded to the Rays in 2016 for cornerback Steve Pearce.

In a December 2017 transaction that brought Joey Wendle from Oakland to Tampa Bay, Heim was the player to be named later.

In August of the abbreviated 2020 season, the 25-year-old made his Major League debut and spent the entire month of September with the major league team, hitting .211 in 12 starts.

In 85 games between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas in 2019, Heim hit .310/.385/.477 with 35 walks and 45 strikeouts.

For the 6-foot-4, 220-pound backstop, that season was a step forward. Heim batted .258 in 118 games between Class A Advanced Stockton and Midland during his first year with the A’s system in 2018.

He struck out in more than 18 percent of his at-bats. The next summer, Heim dropped the figure to 15.6 percent.
