Amir Garrett is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Cincinnati Reds.
The lone Top 100 college basketball recruit with a 96 mph heater is a top 20 talent in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
On the diamond, he is an excellent left-handed pitcher who was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 22nd round on June 7, signed hours before the MLB deadline on Aug. 15, 2011, and rewarded with a lucrative $1 million bonus for his promise of excellence.
He agreed to a deal that allows him to play collegiate basketball while adhering to NCAA standards. Although the Reds paid for his education, he is still part of the St. John’s basketball team’s 13-scholarship maximum.
During the summer of 2012, he began his professional baseball career in the Reds minor league system. In Goodyear, Arizona, he made his rookie-level Arizona League debut with the AZL Reds.
With 13 strikeouts, 12 walks, and a.255 opponents’ average, he made seven outings and five starts. In August of 2012, Amir was promoted to the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League.
He made two starts for the Mustangs, striking out five hitters in 6.0 innings while walking only one and holding opponents to a.211 batting average.
