Mervyl S. Melendez is a Kansas City Royals catcher.
Melendez spent his junior year at St. James School in Montgomery, Alabama, before transferring to Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay, Florida.
In 2016, he was a member of the American national team. He is committed to play baseball for Florida International University in college.
The Kansas City Royals selected him in the second round, 52nd overall, of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft after his senior year. He signed a $2.1 million contract with Kansas City.
Melendez made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Arizona League Royals after signing the Royals, hitting .262 with four home runs and thirty RBIs in 47 games.
He hit .251/.322/.492 with 19 home runs and 73 RBIs in 111 games with the Lexington Legends of the Class A South Atlantic League, earning All-Star honors.
Melendez spent the 2019 season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Carolina League’s Class A Advanced division, where he was selected as an All-Star.
He hit .163/.260/.311 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs in 110 games. Since the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not play in a minor league game in 2020.
He was assigned to the Double-A Central’s Northwest Arkansas Naturals to begin the 2021 season. He was named the Double-A Central Player of the Month for July after hitting .333 with 12 home runs in the month.
In early August, he was promoted to the Omaha Storm Chasers of the Triple-A East after slashing .285/.372/.628 with 28 home runs and 65 RBIs in 79 games.
He hit .293/.413/.620 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs in 44 games with Omaha.
He became the first ever catcher to win the Joe Bauman Home Run Award after hitting 41 home runs in the minor leagues.
Melendez’s contract was selected by the Royals on November 19, 2021, and he was added to the 40-man roster. For the 2022 season, he returned to Omaha.
