The Kansas City Royals are an American professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Royals compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division.
The Royals were formed as a result of the Kansas City A’s relocation to Oakland in 1967, which enraged local lawmakers, who threatened to revisit baseball’s antitrust exemption.
The Royals had a remarkable start to the decade, with Brett’s flirtation with.400 and a sweep of the Yankees finally removing the ALCS monkey from their back.
They won the pennant again in 1985, this time with a disputed seven-game victory against cross-state foe St. Louis behind the amazing pitching of Bret Saberhagen, then 21 years old.
The muscular, multi-sport Bo Jackson was a short celebrity in the late 1980s, yet he brought no postseason activity to Kansas City.
The Royals were constantly crashing and burning in the standings despite the long-overdue inflow of quality batters in the lineup (including Carlos Beltran, Mike Sweeney, Raul Ibanez, and Johnny Damon).
When Royals Stadium (now renamed Kauffman Stadium) was given a massive refurbishment in 2009, there was at least some architectural enhancement.
